How Callisto^TM Vitamin E Creme Functions

The skin is a complex organ whose primary function is a barrier. It protects against environmental pollutants, bacteria and water loss. The skin also helps to regulate temperature and provides sensory input as well as significant immune and metabolic functions.

Untraviolet radiation, a main source of damage to the skin, induces freeradical formation that damages DNA, oxidizes lipids, initiates inflammation, disrupts cell communication, weakens the immune responses of the skin and causes expression of stress response genes.

Vitamin E is the primary lipid soluble antioxidant in the body. In the skin, alpha-tocopherol is a natural sunscreen but also protects the skin from free radical production of UVR or other environmental pollutants. The form of vitamin E present in the cream is very important because research shoes that the epidermis does not hydrolyze the vitamin E ester effectively. Thus, the protective benefits of vitamin E are minimized. In addition, oral vitamn E supplementation does not replenish or protect the skin when compared to topical administration.

Research suggests that gamma-tocopherol and tocotrienols may provide additional protection to the skin. Specifically, gamma-tocopherol neutralizes nitrogen radicals commonly found in pollutants and associated with inflammation. Gamma-tocotrienol suppresses the growth of murine B16 (F10) melanoma cells. Furthermore, alpha-tocotrienol and gamma-tocotrienol preferentially accumulate in the skin as compared to the ratios found in other tissues.
